Would you know if you encountered an angel on the street, at your job, or in a room full of people? And what exactly is an angel?

According to the Miriam-Webster dictionary, an angel is:

  • A spiritual being superior to humans in power and intelligence
  • An attendant spirit or guardian
  • A person like an angel

Listen and view: In the Arms of an Angel

Everyone has their own definition of an angel, including me.

  • An angel is someone who is there to hold your hand, give you a hug, listen, talk, or do nothing at all except be there.
  • An angel knows when you’ve had a bad day, a rough week and offers support allowing you to vent.
  • An angel won’t allow you to fall when you’ve leaped to a dark place
  • An angel just is.

Angels are male or female, young and old, animal, human and spiritual. They appear out of nowhere and they might be right next to you. They are people you know or ones you don’t. I like to think they sit on our shoulders keeping watch at all times. They protect us from harm and wrap their arms around us in our time of need. Angels know just when to call, text, or just send you love. They are people we have known for a very long time, a short time or no time. When our time is up and we arrive home, we receive greetings by angels. They will welcome us with open arms and reunite us with family, friends, and pets.

I love this line from It’s A Wonderful Life, “Teacher says every time a bell rings, an angel gets its wings”. I have an angel bell and it was on my christmas tree in 2008, the month and year my husband Russ passed away, and I would be lying if I said I didn’t hear the bell ring. On Christmas Day 2010, my grandmother passed away and I know she is taking care of Russ and watching over all of us. She too has earned her wings. The song entitled “An Angel Gets Its Wings” by Vince Gill and Trisha Yearwood, has always held a special place in my heart and gets played repeatedly during the holiday season.

Angels are everywhere and nowhere; near and far; fancy and not. Will you be able to spot one on a given day? Will you provide like an angel when the times arrives? Many angels have arrived in my life after Russ passed away and now I am an angel to others. Keep your eyes and ears open for you never know when an angel will ask for your help. Be the angel.
